Najaf police arrest suspects in market fire, cite confessions of arson
NAJAF — Police in Najaf announced Monday the arrest of suspects linked to a fire that broke out earlier this month at the Bala Market in the city’s old district, saying the individuals confessed to setting the blaze.
Authorities launched an investigation immediately after receiving reports of the March 2 fire, according to a statement from Najaf police. Provincial Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mohammed Jaber Thiab formed a task force to gather information, conduct surveillance, and review security camera footage.
“After gathering information, conducting surveillance, and reviewing security camera footage, investigators identified the suspects. During interrogation, they confessed to committing the crime,” the police statement said. Their statements were officially recorded, and a crime scene reenactment was carried out.
Thiab vowed strict measures against anyone threatening public safety in the holy city. Following the investigation, forensic reports confirmed the fire was an act of arson at both Bala and Bird Market locations in Najaf’s old district.
