Iraqi prime minister meets Russian president in Moscow

BAGHDAD, October 10 — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday as part of an official visit to the Russian capital.

Iraqi and Russian senior officials reportedly took part in the meeting, during which bilateral relations and mechanisms for enhancing cooperation in various vital areas were discussed.

Primary among discussions was Iraq’s energy sector and the role of Russian oil companies in investments to boost the Iraqi economy and diversify energy resources. The meeting also addressed several regional and international issues of common interest. Officials also discussed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.

A statement released by Al-Sudani’s office said:

The Prime Minister reiterated Iraq’s steadfast position on the Palestinian issue, affirming the Palestinian people’s right to live with dignity and justice. He called on Russia to take urgent action with the permanent members of the Security Council to stop the ongoing aggressions on Palestinian territories.

On his part, President Putin highlighted the depth of the historical relations between the two friendly countries, emphasizing that the energy sector holds promising and open prospects for further fruitful and effective cooperation.

President Putin welcomed Mr. Al-Sudani’s participation in the sixth edition of the Russian Energy Week, scheduled to convene tomorrow. This event represents an important opportunity to expand partnership between the two countries in the development of the energy, oil, and gas sectors.

Regarding the recent events in the Palestinian territories, President Putin mentioned ongoing efforts and initiatives to address the escalating security repercussions, indicating clear progress on this path.
