Iraq’s Sovereignty Alliance congratulates Syria’s new transitional president

BAGHDAD — Khamis Al-Khanjar, head of Iraq’s Sovereignty Alliance, extended his congratulations to Ahmed Al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed Al-Jolani, on his appointment as Syria’s transitional president, describing the move as a significant step toward “building” the country.

“We congratulate President Ahmed Al-Sharaa on his appointment as head of the Syrian Arab Republic for the transitional phase, and we congratulate the Syrian people on the completion of their blessed revolution and the official beginning of building the new Syria,” Al-Khanjar said in a statement.

Al-Khanjar also welcomed the decisions to dissolve Syria’s army, security agencies, and armed factions, as well as the formation of a temporary transitional legislative council. He called these measures “a real starting point for building a new Syria based on the values of democracy, justice, human rights, and good governance.”

Ahmed Al-Sharaa, leader of the main rebel group that led the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, was appointed as Syria’s transitional president, the country’s military command announced on Jan. 29.

Iraq is approaching its relationship with Syria’s new leadership under Al-Sharaa with caution. On Dec. 26, an Iraqi delegation led by the country’s Intelligence Chief Hamid Al-Shatri met with Syria’s new leadership in Damascus, marking the first official Iraqi security visit since the fall of the Assad regime on Dec. 8.

The visit sparked mixed reactions within the Iraqi political sphere.
