'Not a terrorist act'

‘Technical error’ at Tarmiyah ammunition depot blast kills three officers, injures four

BAGHDAD — A “technical error” caused the explosion of an old ammunition depot in the Al-Bughantoos area of Tarmiyah district, north of Baghdad, killing three officers and injuring four others, the Baghdad Operations Command announced Tuesday.

The command explained in a statement that the explosion occurred during a mission to verify intelligence reports regarding a hidden cache of old ammunition. The operation was conducted by the National Security Service in coordination with the Iraqi Army’s 23rd Infantry Brigade.

“A technical error outside established procedures” caused the explosion during the inspection, the statement said.

In response, an investigative committee has been formed to determine the circumstances and procedural deviations that led to the incident. The command emphasized that such tasks, involving the discovery of ammunition depots or remnants of war, fall under the military engineering corps.

Details about the ownership or original storage of the ammunition remain unclear.

The Baghdad Operations Command also addressed rumors circulating on social media, denying claims that the explosion resulted from a terrorist act or clashes with extremist groups.
