Najaf environment directorate identifies improper chemical storage of photographic fixer solution

NAJAF — The Najaf Environment Directorate has identified violations in the storage of photographic fixer solution during a field inspection of a health sector facility in southern Najaf.

The Chemical Monitoring and Contaminated Sites Evaluation Division of the directorate conducted a regulatory visit to the facility in the Al-Ansar neighborhood near Al-Ansar Market. According to a statement, the inspection revealed improper storage practices for photographic fixer, a chemical used in photographic and medical imaging processes.

The inspection found that the storage area failed to meet the standards outlined in Regulation No. 4 of 1989, which governs the handling and storage of chemical substances. Specific violations included a lack of adequate ventilation, improper labeling of the chemical type and expiration dates, and the absence of records detailing stored quantities. Furthermore, the fixer solution was stored alongside other materials, violating requirements for the independent and isolated storage of hazardous chemicals.

In response, the inspection team filed a detailed report and recommended urgent corrective measures. “It is essential to establish a proper, isolated, and compliant storage facility for fixer in accordance with Regulation No. 4 of 1989,” the directorate emphasized in its statement. The directorate warned of potential legal action if the facility failed to address the violations, highlighting its commitment to safeguarding environmental conditions in Najaf.

Photographic fixer is a chemical solution used to stabilize and preserve images in photography, X-ray development, and industrial imaging. Typically composed of sodium or ammonium thiosulfate, acids, preservatives, and sometimes hardeners, fixer is essential for removing unexposed silver halide from film or paper. However, it poses environmental risks due to its silver content and potential health hazards, including skin irritation and harmful fumes. Proper storage, disposal, and adherence to environmental regulations are crucial to mitigate its impact.
