Sudani discusses preparations for provincial council elections with UN representative

BAGHDAD, October 4 — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani met with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, on Wednesday to discuss preparations for the country’s upcoming provincial council elections.

A statement from Al-Sudani’s office read:

Prime Minister Mr. Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani received today, Wednesday, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

During the meeting, they discussed the cooperation between Iraq and the UN mission, reviewing the mission’s independent strategy for work in Iraq, discussing joint programs and projects implemented by the mission in various regions of Iraq, and monitoring efforts and preparations for the success of the provincial council elections scheduled for December.

The meeting also witnessed a review of Iraq’s efforts in addressing the issue of displaced persons and their voluntary return to their places of residence after providing the necessary conditions to support their stability and reintegration into society. Additionally, they discussed Iraq’s efforts in facing climate challenges and its measures to address the problem of drought.
