'It represents giving'
Baghdad sculpture exhibition highlights slices of Iraqi life and heritage
BAGHDAD — The Baghdad branch of the Iraqi Plastic Artists Association hosted a sculpture exhibition in Al-Mansour, featuring works by sculptors from across Iraq, including both seasoned artists and emerging talents. The sculptures, crafted from wood, iron, and bronze, celebrated Iraq’s rich history and culture, depicting themes such as the country’s ancient heritage, daily life, the marshlands, and traditional Iraqi homes.
“The annual exhibition of the Plastic Artists Association is one of the most important art events in Iraq, attracting both veteran and young sculptors,” said sculptor Alwan Al-Alwani, speaking to 964media. “My contribution today is a piece inspired by the marshlands, a topic dear to my heart because of its cultural significance.”
Al-Alwani highlighted the variety of works showcased and the potential for international recognition with increased support for Iraqi art. He also shared his experience representing Iraq at global exhibitions, including his participation in the prestigious Beijing International Art Expo, where he displayed personal works in multiple editions. “This global event brought together sculptors from all five continents,” he said.
Hamza Shalash, a sculptor from Diyala, presented a striking iron sculpture symbolizing human resilience. “My piece portrays a human hand holding a plant emerging from rubble,” Shalash told 964media. “It represents giving, and the essential tools that enable humans to build, write, and cultivate — the fundamental aspects of life.”
The exhibition also attracted Iraqi artists from abroad, such as Nazem Abd, a painter based in the United States, who traveled to Iraq specifically to attend the event. “This exhibition is a significant milestone for Iraqi plastic arts, showcasing works that bridge our past and present,” he said. “I am proud to witness these extraordinary creations, crafted by young Iraqi hands.”
