Mergasor district first in line

Erbil agriculture department introduces ginkgo trees

ERBIL — The Erbil Agriculture Research Department has begun planting Ginkgo trees, known for their golden-yellow leaves and origins in China, in carefully selected locations within the region.

“In the first phase, we have planted Ginkgo trees in the mountainous areas of Mergasor district, and for future phases, similar areas with suitable conditions will be chosen,” Abdul Samed Mahmood Saleh, head of Erbil Agriculture Research, told 964media.

The department has conducted years of research on the feasibility of growing Ginkgo trees in the Kurdistan Region. Findings indicate that the trees thrive in areas where summer temperatures do not exceed 30°C. In the second phase, Ginkgo trees are slated for planting in mountainous areas in Choman and Sidakan districts within Soran independent administration, starting February next year.

“Ginkgo trees are ideal for Kurdistan’s environment and will play a role in various fields, from healthcare to tourism,” Saleh added.

Beyond their medical applications, Ginkgo trees contribute significantly to environmental improvement. They are highly effective in purifying the air by absorbing harmful gases, playing a vital role in creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
