'Will and determination'

Mohammed Al-Halbousi praises Syrian people, calls for Arab support in reconstruction efforts

BAGHDAD — Mohammed Al-Halbousi, leader of the Taqaddum Alliance and former speaker of the Iraqi parliament, commended the ‘will and resilience’ of the Syrian people on Sunday, expressing hope for stability and security in Syria following recent developments.

“A new beginning is unfolding in Syria. We commend the will and resilience of our Syrian brothers and support their choices,” Al-Halbousi wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

He expressed optimism that this new phase would bring peace and stability to Syria, enabling displaced Syrians to return home. “We hope this phase becomes a symbol of Syria’s stability, security, and the return of its displaced people to their homeland with dignity and honor,” he added.

Al-Halbousi also emphasized the importance of early Arab engagement in supporting Syria during this critical time. “We look forward to an early Arab role in backing the will of our brothers, providing everything needed for reconstruction, ensuring a dignified life, and helping Syria rise again to reclaim its position within the Arab region,” he said.

Syria’s capital erupted in celebration Sunday morning as rebel groups, led by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, declared the fall of President Bashar Al-Assad after entering Damascus in a lighting offensive that began on Nov. 27, capturing key cities like Aleppo, Hama, and Homs.
