Dhi Qar says it is ready to co-host Gulf Cup 28 with Basra

DHI QAR — Dhi Qar says it is ready to host matches at the 28th Arabian Gulf Cup in December 2028, with Basra’s governor proposing that one group play in Basra and the other in Nasiriyah.

“Dhi Qar governorate, in terms of infrastructure, has completed stadiums and others that are nearing completion, in addition to infrastructure projects that are being worked on,” Governor Haider Ghani al-Hassanawi said in a video statement, calling the tournament a chance to introduce the governorate to visitors from the Gulf and boost tourism. Local authorities said on Monday that Nasiriyah would be a host city alongside Basra and that the governorate would provide the resources needed. Basra Governor Asaad al-Eidani said work was under way to complete the required facilities in Nasiriyah.

Baghdad has also been mentioned, and no host city has been confirmed. Iraq will host the tournament from Dec. 9 to 22, 2028, and the Gulf Olympic Teams Championship in Basra from March 21 to April 3, 2027.
