Child killed in traffic incident in Soran

SORAN – A six-year-old child was struck and killed by a car in Soran city on Tuesday evening, according to local authorities.

Mohsen Tahsin, spokesperson for the Soran Traffic Police, told 964media, “A Kia Cerato struck a six-year-old child in the central market area of Soran.”

Tahsin added that the child sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.

Traffic accidents remain a significant concern in the Kurdistan Region. Data from Sulaymaniyah’s Traffic Police Department shows that 111 fatalities occurred in the first half of this year within the governorate.

Nationwide, in 2023, Iraq, excluding the Kurdistan Region, reported 11,552 traffic accidents, resulting in 3,019 deaths and 12,314 injuries, reflecting a slight increase compared to 2022, which recorded 11,523 accidents and 3,021 fatalities. Driver error was responsible for approximately 79% of the incidents, with vehicle malfunctions and poor road conditions accounting for the rest.
