Iraq condemns Israeli strikes on Iran, warning of escalating regional conflict
BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government condemned Israel’s latest airstrike on Iranian targets early Saturday, denouncing it as an escalation of “aggressive policies” that threaten to widen the regional conflict.
In a statement, government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi expressed Iraq’s strong condemnation, emphasizing the risks associated with what he described as the international community’s inaction in the face of “brutal Zionist actions” that impact Palestinians, Lebanon, and Syria. “We condemn and denounce this aggression in the strongest possible terms,” Al-Awadi said.
“Iraq has previously warned of the severe consequences of the international community’s silence on the Zionist regime’s violent behavior, particularly regarding our brothers in Palestine, as well as its attacks on Lebanon and Syria, and now this latest aggression against Iran,” the statement continued.
Al-Awadi reaffirmed Iraq’s solidarity with Iran, underscoring Baghdad’s support for the Islamic Republic. He also renewed Iraq’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, urging both regional and international initiatives to foster peace and stability.
The recent airstrikes by Israel, conducted early Saturday, targeted missile manufacturing sites, missile arrays, and military installations across various Iranian regions, including Tehran. The strikes were reportedly in response to an Oct. 1 missile assault by Iran. Iran confirmed the attacks, stating they caused “limited damage,” while Israel warned that Iran would “pay a heavy price” if it retaliates.
Two members of the Iranian military have reportedly been killed in the strikes.
