Customers look for quality with a bit of nostalgia

Demand for classic-style Iraqi furniture surges amid changing tastes

NINEVEH, September 25 — Carpenters and furniture sellers in the town of Rabia are witnessing a growing preference among customers for vintage designs that were once ubiquitous in Iraqi bedrooms in past eras.

In the renowned Yasin showroom in the Al-Aweenat market in eastern Rabia, modern bedroom designs are scarcely found, as classic designs dominate the selection. Vendors also note that Kurdish designs are no longer high sellers among newlyweds.

Manufacturers in Mosul import wood from Egypt and China, then create designs and assemble the bedroom pieces locally, while vendors in Rabia purchase the furniture sets from Mosul.

Yasin, the owner of a furniture shop, explained, “We import the pieces from Mosul and assemble them into bedroom sets, selling them to the locals. Rabia residents prefer Iraqi-origin bedrooms for their beautiful designs and long-lasting quality.”

Yasin said prices of local Iraqi-style bedroom sets are affordable for the local population, ranging from 900,000 dinars to over 2 million dinars.

“We offer various types of bedrooms, some of which are entirely made in Rabia, although they are limited in number, while others are sourced from Mosul,” he added.
