Twofold increase
Duhok exports 225,000 tons of agricultural products
DUHOK—Duhok Governorate has exported nearly 225,000 tons of locally produced agricultural goods to central and southern Iraq this year, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.
“Since the beginning of this year, 224,739 tons of agricultural products have been sent to central and southern provinces of Iraq, a figure that represents double the amount exported in previous years,” Ahmed Jamil, Director General of Agriculture in Duhok, told 964media.
Jamil attributed the rise to the high quality of Duhok’s products, which has led to a growing demand from farmers across Iraq. He explained that the increase in export rates has encouraged local farmers to plant more of the high-demand crops.
Potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers have been the most sought-after products this year, with demand far outpacing other agricultural goods.
This year’s cultivated areas in Duhok include 2,678 acres of tomatoes, 2,209 acres of cucumbers, 320 acres of eggplants, 9,225 acres of potatoes, 3,143 acres of muskmelons, 1,508 acres of watermelons, and 2,163 acres of onions.
Duhok is known for its diverse agricultural output, supporting various initiatives to boost local production and reduce reliance on imports. A 5,000 square meter facility is planned for the governorate to collect and market locally grown products.
