Iraqi and Iranian foreign ministers discuss U.S.-Iran relations and security agreement
BAGHDAD, September 19 — Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, on Monday to discuss the latest developments in U.S.-Iranian relations, as well as implementation of the security agreement between Baghdad and Tehran.
A statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said:
On the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein met with his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, on Monday, September 18, 2023.
During the meeting, they discussed several issues of mutual interest. The Iranian Foreign Minister commended the visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein to Tehran on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. The visit resulted in the consolidation of mutual cooperation and the initiation of the implementation of the security agreement between the two countries. The Iraqi government, in collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government, took the necessary and essential measures in this regard.
On another note, they addressed the developments in U.S.-Iranian relations, including the release of five American citizens in exchange for funds held by South Korea, amounting to approximately 6 billion euros.
Furthermore, the two sides discussed the political and security situation in the region and Iranian-Gulf relations, aiming to enhance the security and stability of the region.
