‘Ay Delal’
Erbil barber serenades clients with Kurdish folk songs while cutting hair
ERBIL — In the Naznaz neighborhood of Erbil, 32-year-old Ivan Omer from Syrian Kurdistan has crafted a unique blend of music and barbering. For the past 11 years, Omer has been offering more than just haircuts; he serenades his clients with Kurdish folk songs, soothing them with his voice as he works.
From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Omer can be found in his barbershop singing traditional Kurdish songs by artists like Mohammed Arif Cizîrî, Mohammed Shekho, and Tahsin Taha while tending to his clients. His passion for singing started in childhood, and he continues to share this love with his customers daily.
“I have many clients who come to me not just for a haircut but because they enjoy listening to my singing,” Omer told 964media. Some clients even request specific songs, knowing his voice will help them relax. “If I don’t sing, some clients won’t feel satisfied with their haircut,” he added.
Omer’s combination of barbering and singing has made his barbershop stand out in the city. Many find his unique approach intriguing and a welcome change from typical barbershops.
Recently, Omer recorded a traditional folk song titled *Ay Delal,* which is yet to be released. Videos of him singing while cutting hair have gained traction on social media, boosting his popularity and opening doors for greater recognition.
“I’ve always loved these folk singers since I was a child,” Omer said. “Mixing my singing with my barbering has become something that draws people’s attention, and they see it as something special.”
