Decades of memories: Abbas Abu Waad’s enduring bond with his 1982 MZ motorcycle

SALAH AL-DIN — Abbas Abu Waad, a resident of Balad, Salah Al-Din proudly cherishes his 1982 German-made MZ motorcycle, which he purchased 38 years ago. Despite the passage of time, the motorcycle remains his preferred means of transportation through the city streets. Abbas dedicates time to maintaining it, valuing both its functionality and sentimental significance.

The motorcycle, now valued at 10 million IQD ($6,642), has attracted offers from enthusiasts across Iraq. However, Abbas refuses to sell, emphasizing that the bike is more than just a vehicle—it is a symbol of his youth and a repository of cherished memories.

“I bought this motorcycle in the late 1980s, and although its value has now reached 10 million, I’ve turned down every offer from various governorates. It’s not just a bike; it’s a part of my history and memory,” Abbas told 964media.

The motorcycle has remained in pristine condition, retaining its charm amidst modern bikes. Abbas uses it for work, shopping, and leisure, and he fondly recalls long journeys to governorates and districts such as Karbala, Najaf, Kadhimiya, Diyala, Samarra, and Tikrit.

“This bike holds the beautiful memories of my youth and the adventures I had during those trips. I enjoy riding it, and sometimes I’m content just looking at it as it stands in front of my house,” Abbas said.

Abbas often interacts with young motorcyclists in his neighborhood, advising them to ride cautiously and reduce their speed to avoid traffic incidents.

“This motorcycle requires experience and patience to ride. I often use it to navigate the alleys of the city, and while it feels easy for me, I believe the younger generation might find it challenging to handle,” he added.

Youssef Qasid, a young motorcycle rider, expressed appreciation for Abbas’s advice, “Uncle Abbas always gives us advice, reminding us to be cautious, especially on busy roads where accidents are frequent.”

The 1982 MZ ETZ250 is a notable model from the German manufacturer Motorradwerk Zschopau, recognized for its robust design and reliable performance. This motorcycle features a 243cc single-cylinder, two-stroke engine, delivering approximately 21 horsepower.
