Protests in Dhi Qar over unpaid salaries, public services

DHI QAR — Dozens of contract workers protested outside the Dhi Qar Governorate building Sunday, demanding payment of salaries overdue for 16 months and accusing local officials of embezzlement. In a related protest, residents of Al-Aqar blocked the Basra-Baghdad railway with burning tires, pressing for improved public services and inclusion in infrastructure projects.

Zamel Al-Khafaji, one of the contract workers, conveyed the frustration felt by many. “We warn of the growing anger among over 3,000 youths deprived of their rights,” he told 964media.

Hussein Al-Ghalibi, a representative of the protesters, threatened further actions if their demands remain unmet. “Pay our salaries and avoid pushing us toward more drastic measures,” Al-Ghalibi stated.

Sajjad Al-Arabi, a civil activist, alleged that political factions are misappropriating funds meant for salaries to purchase luxury vehicles. “The youth of Nasiriyah are not powerless. We will continue to demand our stolen rights,” Al-Arabi declared.

Simultaneously, demonstrators in Al-Aqar, west of Nasiriyah, voiced their dissatisfaction by disrupting rail services. They demand the integration of their community into local development plans, including road paving and essential services.

Saad Awda, a local resident, said: “We have long been ignored. Today’s action will continue until our basic needs are addressed,” Awda explained.
