Resort area and mountain targeted
Two shepherds injured in Turkish shelling in Sidakan district
SIDAKAN – Two shepherds were injured on Friday due to Turkish shelling in the Bradost area of Sidakan district, Erbil governorate. The bombardment targeted the Lolan resort and Shakiu mountain, resulting in the injuries and the death of six animals belonging to the shepherds.
Karwan Faisal, director of Sidakan hospital, confirmed to 964media that the injured individuals are locals. One shepherd is in stable condition and may not require hospitalization, while the other sustained multiple shrapnel injuries and needs medical attention.
This incident occurs amid ongoing Turkish incursion in Duhok governorate. Turkey regularly conducts airstrikes in the Kurdistan Region, citing the alleged presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or the PKK, which has been engaged in a long-standing conflict with Turkey over Kurdish rights.
According to the U.S.-based Community Peacemaker Teams-Iraqi Kurdistan, which monitors Turkish airstrikes, eight civilians have been killed in the region this year. The organization reported that Turkish military operations and airstrikes resulted in 11 civilian deaths and 13 injuries in 2023. The highest toll was recorded in Duhok governorate, with five fatalities and three injuries, followed by Sulaymaniyah with five deaths and two injuries. Erbil saw one death and eight injuries.
