Car crash on Kirkuk-Baghdad road claims five lives

TUZ KHURMATU — A fatal traffic accident involving three vehicles occurred at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday on the Kirkuk-Baghdad Road near the Suleiman Beg sub-district in Tuz Khurmatu, resulting in three immediate deaths at the scene and injuries to four others who were transported to a hospital.

Today, two of the injured from last night’s accident in Tuz Khurmatu succumbed to their injuries, raising the total number of fatalities to five.

A source at Azadi Hospital in Kirkuk reported to 964media, “Last night, four injured individuals were brought to our emergency unit in critical condition due to the severity of the accident. This morning, two of the injured succumbed to their injuries.”

“The total death toll from the accident has now reached five,” the source added. “Two other injured individuals remain under close medical supervision and are in critical condition. They might be transferred to hospitals in Sulaymaniyah or Erbil if their condition requires it.”

Muayad Abbas, head of Tuz Khurmatu Traffic Police, detailed the sequence of events to 964media, stating, “The accident occurred between a Dodge and an Opel Vectra vehicle.”

“The accident happened when an Opel Vectra, traveling from the village of Khasadarly, entered the main road. The Dodge, moving at high speed, lost control and collided with the Opel before veering off on the side, where a truck hit it.”

According to Iraq’s Ministry of Planning, 3,019 people died in traffic accidents in 2023 across the country, excluding the Kurdistan Region, marking a slight decrease of 0.1% compared to the 3,021 fatalities reported in 2022.
