Two dead, three injured in multi-vehicle crash at Zakho checkpoint

ZAKHO — A crash involving a truck and multiple vehicles at a checkpoint in Zakho, Duhok Governorate, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to three others. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Saturday, according to local reports.

The truck lost control and collided with other cars.

Amir Ali, a spokesperson for Zakho’s health department, said, “Two people lost their lives in the accident, and three others were transported to Zakho’s emergency services with injuries.”

Ali added that the injuries sustained were minor and that the injured are currently under medical supervision.

The Zakho police department confirmed that the two victims were the driver of the transport truck, a 56-year-old Turkish national, and an 8-year-old child from Nineveh.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident, which involved five vehicles, and the investigation is ongoing.

Iraq, excluding the Kurdistan Region, reported 3,019 traffic fatalities in 2023, closely approaching the total from 2022. Driver error was cited as the primary cause in 79% of these incidents, the Ministry of Planning revealed in June.

The ministry’s data further revealed 12,314 injuries from traffic accidents in 2023, a slight decrease from the 12,677 recorded in 2022. Most incidents involved collisions, followed by pedestrian accidents and vehicle rollovers. Other contributing factors included vehicle malfunctions, poor road conditions, and pedestrian behavior.
