Worker dies at rebar manufacturing plant
ERBIL — A worker was killed during his shift at a rebar manufacturing factory in Erbil on Monday evening, according to officials.
Yusuf Karim, the head of the Kurdistan Workers’ Union, informed 964media that the worker, a resident of Soran, succumbed to injuries after falling onto machinery.
Bahman Harki, a cousin of the deceased, said the worker died last night and his remains were transported to Soran for burial.
“He had gotten engaged a week ago and was staying in Erbil for work,” Harki added.
From January to April 28, 2024, the Kurdistan Construction Workers’ Organization recorded 19 worker deaths within the Kurdistan Region and one additional fatality in Kirkuk governorate. In Erbil, nine workers have died, with eight fatalities reported in Sulaymaniyah and two in Duhok.
The organization cited a lack of fundamental safety standards at workplaces, insufficient protective equipment, and minimal safety training offered by employers as major factors contributing to these deaths.
Common causes of fatalities include electrocution, building collapses, falls from heights, machinery-related accidents, and severe bleeding.
In comparison, the Kurdistan Workers’ Union reported a total of 53 worker deaths in 2023, comprising 39 local workers and 14 foreign nationals, marking an increase from the 41 deaths in 2022.
