Three-year-old Penjwen child drowns in pond

PENJWEN — A three-year-old child drowned in a pond late Wednesday in the village of Mirawa, located in Sulaymaniyah’s Penjwen district.

The child, who went missing Wednesday night, was later discovered in a water storage pond near the family’s home, according to Nawzad Salih, the child’s uncle. “After an extensive search, the child’s body was found in the pond,” Salih told 964media.

The pond, which is typically used for water storage, was enclosed. However, the child managed to gain access to the area and subsequently fell into the water, leading to the drowning.

Following the discovery of the child’s body late at night, they were transported to a local hospital where a medical report was issued confirming the cause of death.

This incident adds to a concerning number of drownings in the Kurdistan Region, with 26 cases reported in the first five months of this year alone. In the previous year, there were over 100 drownings reported, despite rescue efforts by civil defense teams who successfully saved nearly 70 individuals.
