Residents applaud new space for families and kids

Baghdad municipality transforms former garbage dump into public park

BAGHDAD, September 11 — Teams from the Baghdad Municipality, in collaboration with the Al-Doura Municipality, are working to convert a former garbage dump into the largest park in the city’s Al-Sihah neighborhood.

Municipality teams have finished clearing the land and prepping the area for grass and tree plantings.

Local residents said they were happy to see the garbage dump transformed into a public park, serving as a recreational space for families and children.

Ahmed Abdul, a municipality employee, said: “The work began with the removal of garbage and animal waste, pouring new soil, adding stones, and constructing fountains and walkways. All that remains is the planting trees and flowers to complete the project. We are working to increase green spaces in the capital and provide elegant parks suitable for residents.”

Zain Al-Abidin Hussein, a resident of the neighborhood, said: “This land used to be a dumping ground for garbage and there were stray dogs and rats. Now, thanks to the Al-Doura Municipality, it will become a park that families and children can enjoy. As citizens, we must preserve and maintain public property, since they will serve us, especially us residents of the area.”
