Delegation in Iran to express condolences

Iraqi PM meets with Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei

NEWSROOM — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Wednesday, accompanied by an official delegation, to offer condolences for the deaths of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials who died in the helicopter crash earler this week.

During the meeting, Al-Sudani expressed his condolences to Khamenei, the Iranian government, and its people, “affirming Iraq’s solidarity and support for Iran during these difficult times,” according to a statement from Sudani’s office.

“He emphasized the deep bilateral relations between the two countries and praised the late President Raisi, describing his passing as a loss for the region as a whole, not just for Iran,” the statement continued.

Khamenei reaffirmed “the strong relations between Iran and Iraq, indicating that Iran will continue its approach of cooperation and mutual interests.” He also noted that with Raisi’s passing, the Islamic Republic has lost “a prominent figure known for his competence and dedication.”

A memorial service was held today at the University of Tehran for the late Iranian President and their companions, including a funeral prayer conducted by Khamenei.

It has been decided that President Ebrahim Raisi’s body will be buried in the city of Mashhad on Thursday.

A helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province, Iran, on Monday resulted in the deaths of President Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian, Ayatollah Al-Hashem, the Imam of Tabriz, the Governor of East Azerbaijan, the flight crew, and other companions.
