'I am my own project'

Kurdish painter Rostam Aghala opens exhibition in Sulaymaniyah

SULAYMANIYAH — Kurdish painter Rostam Aghala recently opened an exhibition in Sulaymaniyah. In an interview with 964media, Aghala discussed his unique approach to art.

“For several years, I have avoided showcasing my works in conventional halls. Instead, I display them in unusual places such as atop a trash bin or near a tree,” Aghala said.

He highlighted that most of these exhibitions are time-limited, typically lasting only an hour, underscoring his belief in the importance of experiencing art outside traditional gallery settings.

Aghala aims to integrate art with everyday life and society. He owns a gallery in Koya and organizes major exhibitions throughout Iraq. “In my gallery, I showcase not only my works but also those of other artists,” he noted.

He emphasized the distinction between mass-produced items and original art. “While people usually buy what they find in the market for their homes, some seek original pieces, something Kurdish and signed by the artist, fostering a connection with the creator,” Aghala said.

Aghala also highlighted the importance of reaching diverse audiences. “Some might not like my work and prefer another artist’s creations for their homes. We need that diversity of viewers,” he explained.

Aghala, a renowned painter from Koya in Erbil, has held exhibitions in various countries worldwide.
