Locals help out with waste management

Kufa residents rally to clear trash piles near Al-Sahla mosque

KUFA, September 6 — The residents of Kufa have taken swift action to remove trash piles near the Al-Sahla Mosque, easing the burden on municipal workers who have been putting in extra effort to clean the bustling route between Najaf and Karbala, crowded with pilgrims during the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Throughout the Arbaeen period, municipalities in Najaf have mobilized resources to clean the main pilgrimage route, leaving few staff to cover normal duties inside cities, resulting in a buildup of trash in various areas.

Abdulaziz Al-Mousawi, a Kufa resident, spoke to 964 and said: “We began cleaning our area and the vicinity of Al-Sahla Mosque since the start of the Arbaeen pilgrimage. This initiative is voluntary because cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility, and the Kufa municipal teams need our support during such times of the year.”

Ahmed Ali, an employee at the Najaf Municipality, stated: “The municipalities in Najaf have completed their tasks on the Najaf-Karbala route. Starting from this afternoon, all our staff will return to their designated areas to begin clearing the accumulated waste. We appreciate the voluntary efforts of the Kufa residents who contributed to cleaning the city streets in record time.”
