Volga cars: From symbols of luxury to preferred cabs in Dhi Qar

DHI QAR – In the bustling streets of Dhi Qar’s Suq Al-Shuyukh district, rows of Russian-made Volga cars in vivid yellow and white catch the eye, standing out against the backdrop of the hectic cityscape. Resembling a blend of vintage Mercedes-Benz C-Class and modern-day models, these cars have a rich history in the area.

Once a symbol of luxury in the 1970s, Volga cars were coveted possessions among the elite. Fast forward to the 1990s, and they had seamlessly transitioned into the preferred choice for taxi drivers, navigating the maze of residential neighborhoods with ease.

Today, Suq Al-Shuyukh’s streets are dominated by six-cylinder models from 2003 and 2004, ranging in price from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on their condition and specifications. Despite their age, these vehicles remain a staple on the roads, favored by drivers for their spaciousness, inexpensive spare parts, and rugged durability, essential qualities for traversing the rough terrain and frequent potholes of Iraqi streets.

Raed Khudair, a local, explains, “It’s very popular as a taxi because its engine is reliable, it includes air conditioning, and it generally has fewer breakdowns with good overall specs.” Abu Ali Mohsen, another Volga driver, echoes this sentiment, stating, “The car is sought after because it withstands bumps and potholes on poor roads, and passengers feel comfortable.”

According to estimates from the traffic division in Suq Al-Shuyukh, there are approximately 400 Volga cars in the district, although this number fluctuates as vehicles are bought and sold frequently. Moreover, many drivers from surrounding areas come here to work, adding to the bustling atmosphere.

These Volga taxis are a vital lifeline for many locals in a province that often leads Iraq’s poverty and unemployment rankings.

Farouk Jabar, a Volga driver, highlights the affordability of these taxis, stating, “In all areas of Suq Al-Shuyukh, the fare is 2,000 dinars ($1.53), and just 500 dinars ($0.38) per person on shared routes.”

With a vast network of routes connecting various residential neighborhoods and suburbs, these Volga taxis are not just a mode of transportation but a vital part of everyday life for the people of Dhi Qar.
