Wasit University student wins big at Asian Universities Cup

HONG KONG – Zain Al-Abidin Ali Al-Saghir, a translation department student at Wasit University, earned four medals at the Second Asian Universities Cup in Hong Kong. Competing in the 120 kg weight class in the youth category, Al-Saghir placed second overall amid stiff competition. The event, featuring contestants from 35 universities across 15 Asian countries, runs through May 11.

Al-Saghir excelled at the competition, held at Queen Elizabeth Hall. The tournament, which started May 3 and ends May 12, drew participants from 35 universities representing 15 Asian countries. Competing in the 120 kg weight class for youth, Al-Saghir won four medals. “I participated in the 120 kg category for youth and earned four colored medals,” Al-Saghir told 964media, highlighting his significant achievement in this international event.

His medals included a gold in deadlift and three silvers—two in squat events and one overall. Speaking to 964media, he said, “My medals were one gold in the deadlift, two silvers in squat, and a silver overall. I am proud of this success despite pre-championship injuries and the challenges of my studies and exams at the Department of Translation in the College of Arts.”

He also took the opportunity to acknowledge other successful Iraqi universities. “I congratulate all the participating Iraqi universities that won gold, silver, and bronze medals, including Diyala University, Al-Kut College University, Babylon University, College of the Future, and Al-Farahidi University, and I thank the coaches for their efforts,” said Al-Saghir.
