Basra father kills 12 family members in apparent murder-suicide

BASRA — In a shocking incident on Wednesday evening, a 41-year-old man in Basra fatally shot his entire family of 12 before taking his own life.

The tragedy unfolded in the Al-Mowazafeen neighborhood of Shatt Al-Arab district. The man, identified as Abbas Hamza Hussein, opened fire inside his home, killing his wife, children, and other relatives, including a child under one year old.

“Preliminary information suggests the father was a real estate professional struggling with debts exceeding one billion Iraqi dinars ($763,000),” said Colonel Aziz Al-Abbadi, media director for the Basra Police.

Authorities are still investigating the incident, and no further details have been released.

Initial reports circulating on social media claimed an armed group was responsible for the massacre. The Basra Police Command swiftly refuted these rumors, confirming the father was the sole perpetrator.
