Volunteers working to complete 1,000 homes

Charity foundation builds 98 houses for needy families in Dhi Qar

DHI QAR — The Majannan Foundation, dedicated to aiding orphans and the impoverished, has successfully constructed 98 residential homes across Dhi Qar governorate, with 40 located in the Suq Al-Shiyoukh district.

“Majannan” is an Arabic word meaning free-of-charge.

The project was financed through donations from affluent individuals, and also covered furnishing for some of the homes. The team, largely composed of volunteers, is aiming to complete 1,000 homes across the governorate. A number of those involved include professional tilers and plasterers, and active military spending their leave on doing charitable work,

Sadiq Jaafar, a foundation representative in Suq Al-Shiyoukh, told 964media the initiative is led by young people from across Dhi Qar and has no religious or political affiliation.

Additionally, the foundation’s efforts range from supporting medical cases to building homes for orphan families, he said, with 98 homes already delivered and another 10 under construction.

“Our goal is to alleviate the burden of rent for the poor and orphans, some of whom live in dilapidated houses.” Jaadar added. “With the help of donors, we provide them with appropriate homes.”

Ahmad Sabbar, a local project coordinator, described the level of need among families receiving the new homes, stating, “Some of the homes are fully furnished because the beneficiaries don’t even own a wardrobe.”

“We equip the homes with bedrooms, kitchens, and cooking utensils, and for families that already possess furniture, we simply help move their belongings into the new home,” he noted.

Families in need, or their relatives, often request housing assistance, Sabbar said, adding that representatives from othe foundation conduct an assessment on the level of need. “Priority is given to orphans, then to the disabled if they have no breadwinner over the age of 20,” he said.

Umm Ibrahim, a beneficiary, expressed her gratitude: “Previously, we lived in a rented house with difficult living conditions. My family consists of several women and one boy.”

“Thank God, the Majannan team in Dhi Qar provided us with a home, building us two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. I wish them all the success.”
