Following deadly Basra collision

Motorcyclist hits child hours after new traffic measures introduced

TUZ KHURMATU — Traffic police in Tuz Khurmatu are ramping up safety measures to protect students in school zones in the wake of a fatal road accident in Basra this week that killed six children and injured another 14, some of them critically.

Tuz Khurmatu police chief Muayyad Abbas told 964media that parents in his district were fearful of their children’s safety with  many opting to personally drop off and pick up students, resulting in traffic jams outside area schools.

The deployment aims to both deter reckless driving and create a safe environment for student movement during peak hours.

However, not all went to plan. Despite the new measures today, a motorcycle driver collided with a student hours later in Tuz Kburmatu, after school hours.

Scenes from surveillance cameras, obtained by the 964media, showed the incident. Sources confirmed that the student is still alive but seriously injured.

“This not only causes congestion but actually poses a greater threat to students’ safety,” Abbas said, adding that police officers would be deployed to school zones at the end of the day to facilitate the flow of traffic and student safety.
