Water reserves in Kurdistan’s dams exceed five billion cubic meters

ERBIL – The total water reserves in both major and minor dams across the Kurdistan Region have surpassed five billion cubic meters, with the largest portion contained within the Dukan Dam.

The Dukan Dam, with a capacity of seven billion cubic meters, has collected 2.9 billion cubic meters of water as of two days ago, which represents over 40% of its capacity. The Darbandikhan Dam, the second-largest in the Kurdistan Region after Dukan, has reached 86% of its capacity with 2.15 billion cubic meters.

The Dohuk Dam, which can hold 52 million cubic meters of water, has reached 88% of its capacity. It was last full in 2019.

In addition to these dams, the Gomaspan Dam is under construction and is expected to become the third largest in the region and the largest in the Erbil governorate with a capacity of 115 million cubic meters of water upon completion.

Beyond these, there are 18 smaller and medium-sized dams in the Kurdistan Region, along with more than 120 ponds which, in total, had 80 million cubic meters of stored water as of two days ago.

The cumulative total of water stored in the dams and ponds of the region exceeds five billion cubic meters.

On Friday, the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources announced that Iraq’s water reserves surged by 10% following a recent deluge of rainfall across the country.
