Kurdistan to transform new dams into tourist hotspots

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s tourism board, in collaboration with the Directorate of Dams, is developing plans to transform the newly built dams in the region into tourist attractions. This initiative aims to boost the tourism sector by leveraging the scenic beauty and recreational opportunities these areas offer.

Ibrahim Abdulmajid, the spokesperson for the Tourism Board, told 964media that the region’s dams are seen as vital for enhancing tourism.

“We have had productive discussions with the Directorate of Dams and are already taking concrete steps to make the dams accessible for tourists,” Abdulmajid said.

The efforts focus on the Smaquli and Gomespan dams in the Erbil governorate.

Initially, a thorough survey of these two dams will be conducted to identify ideal locations for tourist projects. Abdulmajid highlighted that future dams in the Kurdistan Region would be designed considering their tourism potential, ensuring recreational features are incorporated from the outset.

Furthermore, the Tourism Board has consulted with the Directorate of Antiquities to explore the tourist potential of the region’s historical sites. “Many of the region’s historical sites need service projects to be fully integrated into the tourism plan,” the spokesperson noted.
