Amedi assumes office as Iraq’s president in ceremony at Baghdad Palace
BAGHDAD — Nizar Amedi officially assumed the presidency of Iraq on Sunday during a formal ceremony at Baghdad Palace, marked by the national anthem, an honor guard review and a handover of power from outgoing President Abdul Latif Rashid.
Amedi praised Rashid’s tenure and described the peaceful transfer of power as “a fundamental pillar in strengthening the foundations of democracy and enhancing the stability of the state.” Rashid expressed his wishes for Amedi’s success “in a way that serves Iraq’s interests and meets the aspirations of its people.”
Amedi was elected by parliament on Saturday in a second round of voting, receiving 227 votes against 15 for rival Muthanna Amin, after no candidate secured the required two-thirds majority in the first round. The Kurdistan Democratic Party boycotted the session, objecting to proceeding without parallel agreement on the prime minister. Under Article 76 of the constitution, Amedi must task the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc with forming a government within 15 days.
