56 drownings recorded in Kurdistan this year

Baghdad resident drowns in Dukan waters

SULAYMANIYAH, August 28 — A tourist from Baghdad drowned while swimming in the waters of Dukan, north of Sulaymaniyah, on Sunday. Civil defense teams retrieved his body shortly after the incident.

Colonel Adel Saleh, Director of Dukan Police, told 964: “The deceased is a young man from Baghdad, 22 years old, and his body was sent to the forensic department.”

Some 77 people drowned in the Kurdistan region’s lakes and rivers in 2022. The region recorded 56 drownings during the first six months of 2023, according to the General Directorate for Crisis Coordination.
