Fatal mine explosion at border guard command kills three personnel

ERBIL — This morning, in the engineering section of the Border Guard Command, a mine explosion resulted in the death of three personnel. One of the them succumbed to his injuries less than an hour later.

The incident occurred during a training exercise involving mine handling at a command depot. The spokesperson for the Border Guard Command, Major Sami Ismail, confirmed to 964media that the explosion happened while the personnel were engaged in lifting a mine.

The two were from Erbil and one from Akre. A military funeral is scheduled today to honor the three border guard members, as stated by Major Sami Ismail.

Iraq’s Border Guard forces are divided into three regions, with Region One tasked with protecting the Kurdistan Regional Government’s borders, headquartered in Erbil at Kani Qirzhala. This command has approximately 6,500 members.
