Halabja’s iconic Salahkani pomegranates reach Kurdistan Region and Iraqi markets
HALABJA — Halabja’s renowned pomegranates, particularly the locally celebrated “Salahkani” variety, have been making their way into markets across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq over recent days. Known for their rich flavor, soft texture, and vibrant appearance, Salahkani pomegranates are a signature product that sets Halabja’s produce apart.
Haji Nariman, a representative from Halabja’s wholesale market, told 964media that at least 10 tons of pomegranates are officially shipped daily to markets throughout Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, with most of the shipments featuring the Salahkani variety. “Beyond the official shipments, a larger volume is being purchased directly from farmers by pomegranate traders and transported to markets across the region,” Nariman added.
Farmers in Halabja recently began harvesting their pomegranate crops, with the majority of the fruit being sold fresh in local markets. Smaller quantities of the harvest are also used to produce pomegranate syrup and juice, adding value to the local industry.
According to data from the Halabja General Directorate of Agriculture, around 2,600 acres of land are currently dedicated to pomegranate orchards within the governorate.
Located near the Iranian border and roughly 83 kilometers southeast of Sulaymaniyah, Halabja was officially designated as a governorate by the Kurdistan Regional Government in recent years, further solidifying its importance in the region’s agricultural landscape.
