Addressing porous borders

Iraqi joint operations command to secure border points

BAGHDAD — Major General Tahsin Al-Khafaji, the spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, announced on Saturday that the upcoming phase will witness the control of border points with all neighboring countries, which have not been secured over the past years.

In a statement to “Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed”, Al-Khafaji emphasized, “The Iraqi forces are working on securing the entire border strip with all neighboring countries to regulate the borders and prevent any illegal activities along those borders.”

He explained that the Iraqi forces’ control over the border strip with Turkey and previously with Iran aims to preserve Iraq’s sovereignty and prevent any breaches of that sovereignty for any reason. Additionally, securing the border strip will contribute to security and community stability in those areas, now under the control of the Iraqi federal forces.

Al-Khafaji added, “The Iraqi Joint Operations Command is fully coordinating and communicating with the relevant authorities in the Kurdistan Regional Government to control the entire Iraqi border from the northern side. The next phase will see the securing of many border points with all neighboring countries, which have not been controlled in previous years.”
