Gyms see growing membership among a wider swath of society
BAGHDAD, August 17 — Bodybuilding is no longer relegated to the youth; it has become a pursuit embraced by many for the sake of physical fitness and agility. Gyms specializing in bodybuilding note a growing trend among a wider swath of society, including military personnel, signing up for these facilities, aiming to maintain their physical fitness and overall well-being.
Gyms dedicated to bodybuilding in the Al-Hurriyah area report that while the majority of attendees are still young, there has been a recent surge in a diverse range of participants for various reasons.
Captain Abbas Jamal, owner of Hulk Gym in Al-Hurriyah, stated that recent directives from the Ministry of Defense regarding weight limits for military personnel have prompted many to join the gym. He mentioned, “They have been compelled to lose weight, and this can only be achieved through a rigorous fitness and health regimen.”
The gym offers tailored courses based on age and physical condition. Jamal explained, “Dealing with young individuals requires a different approach compared to dealing with older ones.”
In addition to military personnel, another important group participating in these gyms includes individuals with chronic diseases, particularly heart conditions. These members are taught cardio exercises that concentrate on running and stretching, with careful consideration not to exert excessive effort.
First Lieutenant Mustafa Ali, a gym member, expressed his commitment to maintaining physical fitness and well-being due to the demands of his job. He highlighted, “Exercise is beneficial for both body and mind, making it essential for everyone.”
Many of Ali’s officer colleagues have also joined bodybuilding training. Some seek to build an ideal physique, while others aim to lose weight and overcome their bellies.
