Al-Sadiqoun bloc reacts to election of Ahmed Al-Jubouri as Salah Al-Din governor
BAGHDAD — Members of the Al-Sadiqoun bloc released a statement on Monday regarding the election of Ahmed Al-Jubouri, known as “Abu Mazen,” as governor of Salah Al-Din.
The bloc’s statement, attributed to deputy Mohammed Al-Baldawi, denounced Al-Jubouri’s election, as it had previously agreed with a number of council members on a different candidate for the governor’s role.
“Our flesh is bitter. Whoever eats from us will suffer greatly,” the statement said, accusing council members of being “traitors” and stealing from the bloc.
Millions of Iraqis headed to the polls in December 2023 to vote for new provincial council members, who appoint members to senior leadership positions, including president and deputies of the council, as well as the governor.
Al-Jubouri was voted in as the new governor on Feb. 3, along with Adel Abdul Salam Al-Sumaidai as the head of the council, Ayman Al-Ajeeli as the deputy governor and Tariq Al-Fahd as the second deputy.
