Governor position under spotlight

Basra council session postponed, citing lack of consensus

BASRA — The Basra Provincial Council’s session, scheduled for Saturday evening, has been indefinitely postponed, council member Hassan Shaddad Al-Fares confirmed. The delay is due to political blocs’ failure to reach a consensus.

In a statement to local media, including 964media, Al-Fares said, “The session scheduled for this evening cannot take place. It’s postponed until further notice because of the absence of agreement among the political blocs, despite their commitment to constitutional timelines.”

Basra’s political scene is in deadlock after disagreements between the two main blocs in the provincial council over the reelection of Asaad Al Eidani as governor.
