A meat safety conference to be held in Sulaymaniyah

SULAYMANIYAH – A conference involving food experts, health professionals, and meat sellers is being organized in Sulaymaniyah to develop a meat safety project for the Kurdistan Region. The aim is to propose this project to the government for potential legislation.

The Kurdistan Region Statistics Office reports that annually, around 950,000 animals are slaughtered across the region’s four governorates and independent administrations, resulting in approximately 140,000 to 150,000 tons of meat consumption.

The conference, which will focus primarily on fresh and frozen meat, as well as livestock and poultry imports, is set to cover these topics in depth.

Dr. Shalaw Arif, a meat and food expert and one of the conference organizers, informed 964media that university professors and meat safety experts will be participating.

Scheduled for early February this year in Sulaymaniyah, the conference, according to Dr. Arif, will address “issues related to meat quality, impacts, permissions, health standards, and handling procedures for meat from livestock and poultry.”

The outcomes of these discussions are anticipated to result in a detailed project proposal, slated for submission to the government in hopes of it being introduced as draft legislation. However, with the dissolution of parliament last year and ongoing election delays, the legislative process is to be on hold until a new parliament convenes.
