Zaidan discusses U.S. sanctions with Treasury Department delegation
BAGHDAD, January 29 — The head of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, met with a U.S. delegation led by Treasury Department Deputy Secretary Brian Nelson on Monday for talks on sanctions imposed on Iraqi companies and individuals.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced a recent set of sanctions against Iraqi airline Fly Baghdad, its CEO Basheer Abdulkadhim Alwan Al-Shabbani, and key figures of the Iran-aligned militia Kata’ib Hizballah on January 22.
A readout of Zaindan’s meeting with the U.S. delegation stated:
Today, Monday, January 29, 2024, Judge Dr. Faiq Zaidan, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, received Mr. Brian Nelson, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. The meeting was attended by the Acting Head of the U.S. Mission in Iraq, Mr. David Burger, the Legal Attaché at the U.S. Embassy, Ms. Ellen Endrizzi, and their accompanying delegation.
The two parties discussed legal procedures and sanctions issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regarding Iraqi individuals and companies.
