Zakho tourism administration commemorates old shopkeepers

ZAKHO, January 25 — In a tribute to the shopkeepers of Zakho, the local tourism administration has undertaken an initiative to honor merchants by displaying their photos prominently in the city’s old market.

Tourism Director General Chia Amin told 964media the initiative aimed to pay homage to the individuals by curating a visual representation of old shopkeepers.

Amin noted that officials have already collected and displayed 240 photographs with 50 more expected in the near future.

The tourism administration also hopes to highlight the old market’s history and authenticity by using the photos to showcase the past. Photos on display date back as far as the 1920s.

Zakho’s old market hosts 150 shops in the heart of the city. Historical records indicate the market served as a marketplace for both Muslims and Jews in ancient times.
