Staff shortages, outdated equipment

Capacity at Khanaqin Public Hospital faces severe strain

KHANAQIN — Khanaqin Public Hospital is grappling with severe staff shortages and outdated equipment, forcing residents to seek specialized medical services in other cities.

Dr. Shwan Shaker, the director of Khanaqin Public Hospital, expressed to 964media the critical challenges the hospital faces: “We lack specialists across various medical fields, and we also experience a shortage of medications.”

Its capabilities do not cover all necessary medical treatments, especially in critical areas such as neurology and nephrology.

The hospital’s limitations have forced many patients to undertake journeys to larger cities like Sulaymaniyah and Baghdad, which are at least three hours away, or to other nearby towns such as Kalar. These transfers are not only inconvenient but have occasionally led to severe traffic accidents, further complicating the patients’ situations.

According to hospital data provided yesterday, the cardiology and enterology departments alone had to treat 149 patients in single day, straining capacity.

Despite these efforts, the lack of comprehensive specialist care and inadequate facilities continue to hinder their ability to provide adequate healthcare.

Residents also highlighted broader neglect in public service sectors within the city, indicating a systemic issue extending beyond healthcare. The hospital, though equipped with five ambulances, faces additional challenges as all are currently non-operational, limiting immediate response capabilities in emergencies.

Khanaqin is a district in Diyala governorate, predominantly populated by Shiite Kurds.
