Iraqi intelligence agents nab drug traffickers and uncover oil smuggling operation

BAGHDAD, January 24 — Iraqi intelligence and security forces arrested three drug traffickers in Baghdad and Nineveh on Wednesday, simultaneously uncovering an illicit oil smuggling operation in the capital’s Al-I’lam neighborhood.

A government-issued statement said:

Field units of the General Directorate of Intelligence and Security, in coordination with Narcotic Affairs, successfully apprehended three drug dealers and distributors in Baghdad and Nineveh governorates. Arrest warrants were issued under Article 28 of drug-related offenses. [The suspects] were handed over to relevant authorities, in accordance with legal procedures.

In a separate operation, the intelligence and security directorate in Baghdad, affiliated with the same department, managed to uncover a facility used for smuggling oil derivatives in the Al-I’lam neighborhood of Baghdad. Two tanks, each with a capacity of 15,000 liters and containing petroleum products, and two transport vehicles were seized. The confiscated items were handed over to relevant authorities.
