Drug suspect shoots himself after hostage standoff with police in Baghdad
BAGHDAD — A suspected drug dealer shot himself Thursday after taking his family hostage and opening fire on security forces trying to arrest him in Baghdad’s Nahrawan area, wounding a Federal Police officer, the Interior Ministry said.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, and security forces brought the situation under control, the ministry said. It did not disclose his condition, the severity of the officer’s injuries or whether any family members were harmed.
A joint Federal Police and local police force carried out the operation under a judicial warrant issued after the suspect’s father filed a complaint. The suspect was wanted under Article 431 of the Penal Code and was also suspected of drug trafficking, the ministry said.
When officers surrounded his home, he took family members hostage and fired at the force, wounding the officer. Police said they tried to ensure the family’s safety before he shot himself as officers tightened their cordon around the house.
On Oct. 20, a suspected drug dealer in Basra’s Mishraq neighborhood detonated a hand grenade during an arrest operation, killing himself and wounding eight security personnel, including two officers. Three of the wounded have been discharged from the hospital, and five remain under medical care.
On Sept. 20, the head of the North Dhi Qar Anti-Narcotics Department was shot in the abdomen and leg during an operation against two suspected traffickers in Shatrah. Both suspects were arrested, and authorities seized a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine, a rifle and five hand grenades.
Security forces arrested 3,742 people and seized 1,147 kilograms of drugs in the first quarter of 2026, according to Interior Ministry figures released in October. The ministry recorded 19 armed confrontations with suspected traffickers in that period, in which one member of the security forces and three suspects were killed.
Security forces will continue carrying out judicial arrest warrants, the ministry said.
