Worker hurt as old grenade explodes in Duhok house

DUHOK — A 24-year-old worker was injured on Tuesday when an old hand grenade detonated as he handled it inside a house in Duhok, health officials said.

The workers were clearing a room in an old house when they found three grenades under debris, according to officials. Believing them inactive, the man tampered with one and it exploded. Colleagues took him to Duhok Emergency Hospital, where the on-duty physician said he had shrapnel injuries to his legs, hands and neck, was in a stable condition and remained under observation.

Officials did not say what happened to the other two grenades, whether bomb disposal teams attended or whether the property has been cleared. How long the grenades had been there, and how they came to be in the house, is not known.
