Hit municipality gives businesses three days to clear sidewalk encroachments
ANBAR — The Hit Municipality Directorate has given individuals and businesses three days to remove encroachments from public sidewalks, including merchandise displays, scrap materials and barriers placed in front of shops.
The notice instructs violators to clear sidewalks and keep them open for pedestrians while removing obstacles that block vehicle parking in front of commercial properties. Those who fail to comply will face legal measures, financial penalties and forced removal of the encroachments.
“We issue this general warning to all those encroaching on public sidewalks by displaying goods, storing scrap materials or other items,” the municipality said. “Sidewalks must be left open for pedestrians, and roads in front of shops must not be blocked with barriers that prevent vehicle parking.”
Municipalities across Iraq have periodically launched similar campaigns to remove encroachments from sidewalks, roads and public spaces, citing pedestrian access, traffic flow and urban organization. Local authorities have said blocked sidewalks force pedestrians onto roads and contribute to congestion in commercial areas.
